Save Money, Lower Maintenance, Live Better (and made easy): the Awesome Apartment Concept!
Perhaps you are debating between moving your family to a standard home or townhouse. Or maybe you're just ready to live where all the action is...downtown.
Bayside Builders covers the whole spectrum: apartments, condominiums, townhouses; furnished or unfurnished; starter apartment to luxury experience. What's the difference? How to know which to choose?
A few definitions might help. An "
apartment" is a self-contained
housing unit that occupies only part of a building; you can own one or rent one. Some apartment owners opt into "
co-ops", where residents own shares of a corporation that owns the building or development; or "
condominiums", where residents
own their apartments and share ownership of public spaces.
Since the definition of "apartment" is so broad, convention has categorized different types. A "studio" is the tiniest of all, a large room that functions as the living, dining/kitchenette, and bedroom, while only the bathroom is in a separate room.
This is mostly common in large cities. As soon as another room is added, the apartment becomes a "one bedroom", "two bedroom", or "three bedroom" apartment, and so on, and Bayside Builders builds them all!
Trendy and artistic, a "
loft" is a gutted industrial, warehouse or commercial space converted into an apartment, like
The Loft at 6 Queen St. Exposed pipes, spiral staircases or ladders, open spaces or open topped rooms are popular in these models, and exposed brick, original hardwood
floors and walls or cedar beams and timber rafters are much more coveted.
Traditionally in Canada, a basement suite, also called an "in-law suite" because it began as the concept of converting part of the
house for the use of a family member, is common. Bayside Builders owns one such suite at
137 Central St for rent or for sale with the house. If you're interested in renting or even building something similar in your house, mention this!
A "
townhouse" is a single to multiple-story city or suburban unit with its own entrance, linked to others horizontally but not vertically. Check out these
Jennifer Street townhouses. Today "townhouse" is meant mostly to mimic detached or semi-detached homes; however, historically, a townhouse denoted wealth, particularly aristocracy who owned a country estate as well as a luxurious city apartment. The vertical nature of the townhouse (and thus multiple floors) allows for a large living space on a small acreage and thus the downtown location or if in the suburbs, a larger yard or garden for owners or renters. "
Rowhouses" are several single or multiple-story adjacent, uniform units, generally smaller and less luxurious than a townhouse, but similar in concept. Ask us about all our townhouse options.

When looking for your apartment, consider how much space you
need, but also consider your practical needs too. Appliances; in-suite laundry facilities; wiring for phone, internet and cable may or may not be included in your rent or purchase, though they are in most Bayside Builders homes. Ask about essentials like garbage, mail, storage and especially parking. A parking garage,
particularly downtown like the one found at
The Suites on St. Stephen, is a more and more sought after luxury so will raise the
value of the property and thus your rent.
